AS IN FOLLOW-UP!
Networking follow-up is everything in business relationships. Nothing happens without follow-up. Well, almost nothing.
If you’ve ever been coached in any sport, the phrase “follow-through” often comes into play. Follow-through is important for your golf swing, baseball/softball swing, tennis stroke, even dance, gymnastics, and cheer movements. Bodybuilders are trained to follow through on their pose. And of course, following through on a punch is important for striking effectively, defending effectively, and hopefully not getting hurt.
Well, the language of “follow through” in the #businessnetworking world is follow-up. Yes, the FU!
FU BEST PRACTICES (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)
REASON
There has to be a reason why. They can help you, you can help them, you can help each other, potential client, potential referral source, employer, recruit, or it’s simply social. It should be clear to all parties. Remember, you don’t have to follow up with everyone you meet.
CONNECTION
Does there seem to be a natural vibe and real rapport? Sometimes it feels that way initially, but it’s just everyone being on their best behavior. You can explore this by suggesting a “next step” to continue the conversation.
INITIATE AT THE MOMENT
If you feel there is reason to have another chat, mention it during the initial conversation. This allows you to assess mutual interest and set the next step right away. Then exchange contact info and move forward.
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Ask in your face-to-face meeting if they’re open to reconnecting. If yes, suggest you’ll follow up within 24 hours to coordinate. Then actually follow through. This keeps momentum strong and your FU game sharp.
BE ENGAGING AND COLLABORATIVE
If your FU is virtual, be focused, present, and intentional. Ensure the conversation is a win-win. Stay aligned with the original reason for connecting—don’t assume they are a prospect unless they are.
STAY IN TOUCH
It’s easy to lose contact with people if they don’t immediately become prospects, referral sources, or clients. If there’s rapport and potential, create a strategy to stay connected. Invite them to networking events or other touchpoints.
FINAL THOUGHT
Nothing happens without follow-up. Well, almost nothing.
As business owners and sales leaders, it’s on us to initiate the next step. Otherwise, very often, there is no next step.
