Pow! In no particular order, just what came to mind!

PREPARATION
As in no preparation. Not researching event, attendees, speakers, or your plan of action beforehand. Big miss.

ALL ABOUT YOU
See how you are? Business networking is a “we” thing. How can we help each other? Forgetting to engage in a two-way conversation will quickly end the conversation.

LIKABILITY
Without chemistry, connection, common ground, and compatibility (The C’s of Love!), there probably won’t be likability. Remember, people don’t hire or refer those they do not like. Obvious but worth mentioning.

ASKING FOR TOO MUCH TOO SOON
Networking is about building relationships, not instant favors. Take your time in developing the connection. That’s how first dates lead to second dates. Or so I’m told.

NO FOLLOW UP
Or next step. It’s all about the FU! In fact, initiate a possible next step right there in your conversation. That is, if it makes sense. Then, send a message the very next day, connect on LI, etc., etc.

NOT HAVING A CLEAR GOAL
Are you looking to generate business, land a job, socialize, fund raise, or something else? Be clear on your why so you know where to go, what to say, and with whom!

BUSINESS CARDS BREED BUSINESS
Not having them (or some digital version) makes it more difficult to keep in touch and invite a “next step”. Especially true when you’re not in a traditional networking setting like the gym, airport, or local coffee shop.

ASSUMING EVERYONE YOU MEET IS A PROSPECT
Everyone is not a prospect. They may be probable referral partners but if you treat them as prospects, you’ll never know.

BEING UNCLEAR ABOUT WHO TO MEET
You don’t have to have a target market but having one makes networking much easier. Having a focus on a target industry and profession (at least for the event you’re attending) will allow those you meet to better help you.

NO STAYING IN TOUCH STRATEGY
More than social media, bots, and CRMs. Having a system for staying in touch with your most important referral sources, prospects, and clients is important. That is the power of networking groups and always having a place to invite your favorite contacts.

Business Networking should be fun! Maybe not at first and not to everyone. Here’s the thing. If you’re clear about your message, your process, and your purpose, you will have much more fun and success at networking!
