I just led another LIVE networking event in Atlanta on behalf of THE Networking Group!

I was told it was our 11th LIVE event in the ATL, and it was proudly sponsored by John Phillips and Walden Mergers and Acquisitions.

The event brought together a fantastic group of professionals for an evening of networking, meaningful conversations, and interactive group activities. The attendees were strategically organized by profession, allowing for more relevant discussions and stronger connections.

A tremendous amount of work goes on behind the scenes to make these events successful, but seeing the energy in the room and the relationships that are formed makes it all worthwhile.

Reflecting on the event inspired me to share 10 things to keep in mind when attending any networking event.

Start Conversations

Hello, my name is Michael! Nice to meet you. (Then ask questions about them or share a quick personal story about yourself. Then ask if they can relate and have a story!)

Focus on a Target Market

Having a TM makes it easier to speak with others while making yourself more referable. Mention that you focus on working in a specific industry or with a specific profession.

Have an Elevator Speech

Not a speech or a pitch per se. If you can wax poetic about your profession, expertise, target market, and a specific request or call to action, you’ll be way ahead of the game.

Bring a Guest or Two or Several

If you’re going to an event, there will always be others in your network that can benefit from the same event. So why go alone? It’s always more fun and safer to swim with a buddy.

Learn and Have Questions to Ask

Nobody can stop you from learning so prepare great questions so you can learn about the event, the people you meet, and how you can potentially be a resource for them.

Offer to Help

“How can I help?” Maybe the best question you can ask someone you meet at a networking event, cocktail party, golf outing, conference, or networking meeting.

Be Ready to Talk About Fun Stuff

Is there a playoff game taking place? March Madness? Is the circus in town? Did you recently dine in a new restaurant? Attend a concert? See a movie? Wrap up a streaming show? Don’t be afraid to have fun talking about fun stuff!

Plan Your Follow-Up Strategy

You don’t have to follow up with everyone you meet. That said, if you made a promise, make sure you handle it within 24 hours or ASAP. This sends a positive vibe about you!

Stay True to Your Word

Obvious. Not obvious. How many times have you met someone who made a promise and didn’t follow through? How many times have you not honored your word? Does NOT send a positive vibe about you.

Determine How You Will Stay in Touch

If you don’t regularly see your fellow networkers, it’s difficult to stay in touch. Social media is helpful, but having a definitive strategy to stay connected with your most impactful referral partners is something even great networkers struggle with. It might simply start with making a list of your referral partners. What will be your next step?

Try these strategies at your next networking event. You will absolutely be more confident, get a better return on your time and effort, be more referable, and have way more fun.

I hope these tips help you make the most of your next networking event!
