6 ways to stay connected with business contacts go beyond simple #businessnetworking. It’s about building lasting, mutually beneficial relationships. Whether you’re nurturing prospects, referral partners, or clients, consistent and thoughtful communication can make all the difference. Out of sight is out of mind.
Below are 6 ways to stay connected and strengthen your business relationships.
SEND OCCASIONAL MESSAGES
Just this second, I sent a member of my networking group a birthday text. A simple message to ask how someone is doing can go a long way. You don’t always need a specific reason to reach out. Sometimes a quick “Hope you’ve been well” or “I was thinking about our last conversation” is enough to keep the connection alive. The key is to be genuine and not overly frequent.
SHARE CONTENT
If you come across an article, podcast, or report that aligns with a contact’s interests or industry, send it their way. Adding a short note like “This made me think of you” shows that you value the relationship and are paying attention to their work.
ENGAGE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Interacting with your contacts on platforms like LinkedIn is a low-effort but effective way to stay visible. Commenting thoughtfully on their posts is a great strategy as long as your comments have substance. Also, congratulating them on achievements or resharing their content helps maintain a consistent presence.
SCHEDULE “CATCH UPS”
For closer professional relationships, setting up occasional calls or coffee meetings can strengthen your connection. These meetings don’t have to be long or formal. Sometimes a 15-minute virtual check-in is enough to keep the relationship warm and meaningful.
OFFER HELP
Without expecting anything in return. One of the most powerful ways to maintain business relationships is to be helpful. Whether it’s making an introduction, offering advice, or sharing an opportunity, giving value without expecting something in return builds trust and credibility over time.
INVITE TO EVENTS
Remember the Disney song “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast? “Be our guest, be our guest, put our service to the test…” It’s fun inviting others to attend a meeting with you and, as appropriate, be your guest.
You don’t need to, but it’s nice to pay for someone to attend a networking event, cocktail party, or meeting. They will never forget the value and experience that you provided. In fact, it’s one of my rules to always bring a guest with me to every event. Who should be your next plus one?
(Best Practice: End meetings by asking, “When would be a good time to speak again?”)
Staying in touch doesn’t require constant communication; it requires thoughtful, intentional interaction using a daily or weekly system. Focus on being authentic, helpful, and consistent. Over time, these small efforts compound into strong professional relationships that can open doors, spark opportunities, and support long-term success.
