I’m basing these “getting things done” ideas on a presentation delivered by one of my college students in the public speaking class I teach. 😉
Getting things accomplished isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment. That perfect moment rarely comes. Getting things done is about showing up, scheduling the time, doing the work, and pushing forward even when it’s uncomfortable. While strategies, tools, and systems can help, real progress is built on these four traits.
Resilience
This is what keeps you in the game when things don’t go your way. Plans fall apart. Deals don’t close. Opportunities disappear. You didn’t land the client. Or the job. The weight didn’t come off. The difference between those who succeed and those who stall is the ability to bounce back quickly. Resilient people don’t dwell—they adjust. They take setbacks as feedback, not failure, and keep moving forward with sharper focus.
Self-Sacrifice
There’s no way around it. If you want meaningful results, something has to give. That might mean sacrificing time, comfort, or even short-term rewards. While others are relaxing, you’re refining your craft. While others hesitate, you’re taking action. The willingness to give up what’s easy now for what matters most later is a defining trait of high performers. Examples may include going to sleep earlier, drinking more water, getting to the gym, spending better time on social media, doing your homework, reading a book, sharpening the skill, earning that designation or degree, making that long trip to the networking event, or logging on during dinner time.
Grit
Where effort meets endurance, it’s not just about working hard—it’s about working hard consistently over time. Being consistent is the key, the compound effect of making a focused effort every day. Think about doing 30 sit-ups a day. If you do 30 sit-ups in just one day, or even 50 in one day, there won’t be a lot of benefits. But if you did 30 sit-ups every day, the compound effect over time is immeasurable. Anyone can start strong, but grit is what sustains momentum when motivation fades. It’s the discipline to keep going when progress feels slow. The commitment to finish what you start, no matter how long it takes.
Determination
And then there’s the simple but powerful principle to stay determined. Determination is your internal compass. It keeps your goals front and center, even when distractions try to pull you off course. Determined people don’t rely on bursts of inspiration; they rely on clarity of purpose. They know why they started—and that “why” fuels their persistence. Often, the sit-ups, business practices, and personal development become habits and a permanent change in behavior. That is the real payoff of being determined to do the thing and get it done.
Final Thought
When you combine resilience, self-sacrifice, grit, and determination, you create a mindset that doesn’t just chase success—it earns it. Progress becomes inevitable because you’ve built the habits and character to withstand the journey.
At the end of the day, getting things accomplished isn’t about doing more—it’s about becoming more.
